The Suffern Farmers' Market opened in early summer 2002 to an enthusiastic and supportive community. Back in 2000 Nadia Maczaj, Market Director, brought the idea to the Suffern Civic Association. The SCA took on the project and volunteers formed a committee and began the process of establishing a market in our village. The Suffern Farmers' Market committee met regularly; presented the idea to village leaders; raised funds through raffles, special movie events at the Lafayette Theater, and grants, and spoke to village merchants and business leaders about the project. Vendors were approached, space and logistical support came from the village, a market manager was hired through partnership with Rockland County Americorps, and in June of 2002, the Market made its debut.

The first-year market showcased eight vendors at the height of the season. All were eager to return for a second season in 2003, which saw the market grow to almost 20 vendors! A special one-day Holiday Market was added in November 2003, after the close of the main season in October. This was a huge success - vendors were thrilled to be back again, customers enjoyed shopping locally for holiday foods and gifts and the warm weather made it all the more enjoyable!

The 2004 season was more of the same only better. Vendor participation grew once more, with nearly 20 vendors for the majority of the season. the SCA offered cold water, hot tea, and coffee for the shoppers, and thanks to Mother Nature, witnessed severe rainy conditions only once all season. The 2003 Holiday Market morphed simply into a longer market season which ran straight through to the Saturday before Thanksgiving.

The Market continues to develop each year, having celebrated its fifth season in 2006 and in 2007 opening two weeks sooner than ever before. A wide variety of vendors and products invites a steady stream of customers from Suffern and surrounding communities. The market committee works hard to advertise and reach out to the community, and the market itself serves as a community hub on Saturday mornings. Frequent entertainment - from musicians to childrens' entertainers to student poetry readings - keeps folks milling about, spending time with neighbors and friends. Raffles, food tastings and other special features add to the festive atmosphere. There's always something new and exciting at the Suffern Farmers' Market.
